Google me timbers

Google includes a nice clean and simple calendar in their plethora of tools. They are slowly building something that for me is free if you don't count the ads. Now I wonder what happens if a year or two from now they decide that there is even more money in charging an annual fee for it's features. By then gmail, calendar, desktop searching, froogle, local search, maps, World ..... will be so integrated into our lives that it will be easier to pay the money than try to replace all those tools so they are in a cohesive area. I'm already in over my head in google. It they take the 'beta' down I'm gonna be missing a huge bunch of my life. Photos, files, documents, letters from my wife.... Since they integrated POP3 I should take advantage of it and attempt to download my mail into an outlook file on my laptop. Currently I'm at 55MB, not bad.

Does anyone really know what Google's long term goals are?
